Here is mentioned of Qrmr. and Hon. Lieut. Charles Spalding (son of James Spalding, Boat Brae. Born and brought up in Rattray).  Enlisted in Army Service Corp. 1879.  Served in Soudan Expedition, 1885, with A.S.C. Promoted Qrmr. and Hon Lieut. 1899.  Served in South African War 1899 - 1902, and took part in operations in Cape Colony and Orange River Colony (Queen's medal, with two clasps; King's medal, with two clasps).  Still serving.
