His parents had died when he was eight, and he came from Montrose, Angus, to stay with his aunt and uncle at Drumend, Rattray.
After he left school he worked for Messrs Thomas Thomson Ltd., Keithbank Mill, Rattray.
He had wanted to join the Navy, but was turned down due to a slight eye defect. He went on to join the K.O.S.B's, and was later transferred to the Cameronians.
