Extra information :-   Before the war Alex served with the Territorials.  He had the honour of representing his unit, Blairgowrie Platoon of A Company, 6th/7th Black Watch, on the processional route at the coronation of the King and Queen in London in 1937. 

When he was called up in 1940, he joined the Pioneer Corps, and was with them in the D-Day landing in Normandy. 

Even though he was born in Glasgow, Alex spent much of his life in the district, especially the Rosemount area. His father was a fruit grower at Essendy, and Alex also worked on Rosemount Farm. 

Nearly two years before his death he married Mary, of 5, Waddington Street, Bishop Auckland, County Durham, who was then in the A.T.S. serving as a motor driver.  At the time of his death, they had a daughter of ten months old.
